CFIVA PRESIDENT BREAKS WORLD PARACHUTING RECORD

Wednesday, November 6, 2002

Geronimo!
Association President Major Martin Cruickshank has broken the World Record for a round canopy, High Altitude High Opening parachute drop for the second time. A former captain in the Ulster Defence Regiment, Cruickshank served in an elite brigade of the Croatian Army during their war of independence.

He joined adventurer Graham Spicer in California where they jumped from a height of 30,000 feet in temperatures of minus 36 degrees Centigrade. They both made safe landings, half an hour later, in a cornfield. Their survival depended upon each parachutist carrying three bottles of oxygen and wearing several layers of thermal clothing beneath their jump-suits.

Cruickshank is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a member of the Association of British Military Parachutists. During the 1990's he played an important role in developing the Croatian Army's parachute-commando-sniper training programmes and has seen action in four wars, including Burma. The world record breaking team, includung Major Cruickshank, intend to break further parachuting records next year.
