VUKOVAR: PILGRIMAGE AND REMEMBRANCE
Tuesday, August 31, 2004

Secretary Daniel Kington places the wreath at the Vukovar Heroes' Memorial.

Monday, 30th August 2004 was marked across the nations of Croatia, Bosnia-Hercegovina and Kosova as the International Day of Missing Persons. Making his annual pilgrimage of remembrance to eastern Croatia, Association Secretary Daniel Kington was privileged to lay a wreath on behalf of his veteran International Volunteers at the base of the War Memorial in the Cemetery of Heroes at Vukovar on the beautiful river Danube. Following a few all too brief words, a prayer, a moments' silence and reflection he paused nbefore leaving to sign the Visitors' Book, quoting the oft-used poem by AE Haussman;
"Here dead we lie because we did not choose To live and shame the land/ From which we sprung./ Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose/ But young men think it is/ And we were young."
The Association's sincere gratitude go once again to the management and staff of the cemetery for their kindness and assistance. Thanks to all members, friends and supporters whose generous donations made these modest but heartfelt tributes to our fallen comrades possible.
