CFIVA MEMBERS' SPONSORED CHARITY WALK
Sunday, February 19, 2006

Intrepid walkers bear the Association's old standard to give them heart before setting off.

Three of our intrepid members set out early on Saturday, 18th February to walk through driving wind and rain ten miles (16km) along the South Downs Way, an ancient trackway running along the coast of southern England. Richard Hanton, David Holiday and Association Secretary Daniel Kington trekked along a ridge of hills, through tracks deep in mud and enduring poor visibility, assisted by Holiday's GPS set that ensured, in spite of Kington's excellent map reading skills, they never got lost (very much). A fourth member Dr Martin Parry, who was unable to participate due to being on call, nevertheless arrived to wave off the team at the start line. Despite the inclement weather, the group made excellent time and arrived safely at their destination (a village pub of course!) without accident, mishap or misplacing themselves. Tucked up safely inside with a refreshing pint of beer, sat in front of an open log fire and enveloped in clouds of steam as damp clothes slowly dried, our walkers had time to reflect on the immense satisfaction of completing a long walk, especially when it has been done in a very good cause. The event could not have been achieved were it not for the secretary's wife Mrs Kington who transported the team to the start line, acted as safety marshal and collected everybody from the pub at the end, cooked a lovely dinner, provided overnight accommodation and even put up with everybody's old war stories. This was an outstanding effort by all of those involved, raising ᆪ185 (ᆲ300) for fellow Association member Sean Vatcher's humanitarian aid mission to provide vehicles, equipment and training to the fire fighters of Croatia and Bosnia.
