WALKING FOR WELFARE
Friday, June 30, 2006
After months of cold and rain, Saturday, 3rd June 2006 was as perfect a day as one could possibly have hoped for to stage our sponsored walk along Englands South Downs Way for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Bright sunshine and warm temperatures allowed stupendous views across southern England on one side and far out across the Channel on the other. Following the same route as they did last February, our members led by Secretary Daniel Kington found the going much easier (they also didnt have to rely on Kingtons map reading!) and met more people along the way. In fact they were so successful that the route was completed by late lunchtime, so they walked on a bit further(!) eventually covering 20.4km (13 miles) before venturing down to base camp, a nice little village Pub, for a pint of beer and some chips. Our thanks again go to Dan's wife for providing the transport. So far the team have managed to raise ᆪ180 (ᆲ270) for the Legions welfare work amongst the British and Commonwealth war veteran community. NB: Following the last of our sponsored walks, another ᆪ30 (ᆲ43) has come in, bringing the total raised for member Sean Vatchers humanitarian aid mission for the firefighters of Croatia to ᆪ215 (ᆲ312). Svaka ast to all those involved in raising these charitable funds.
