LETTER FROM BEYOND
Monday, September 10, 2007
This despatch has come from one of our members who for many years has been at the forefront of the non-governmental security operations in Iraq and Afghanistan: "It's been a long time since I was last in touch and I'm very conscious of that fact. So I thought it was high time I touched base with you and gave you a brief run-down of what I've been doing. I'm still working for Global and I think I've got a company record because I'm enjoying my ninth contract with them in only two and a half years! It certainly helps to maintain interest when you move to a new job or a new country every few months. So, in order, I've run convoys in northern Iraq (Northstar), guarded the US embassy in Kabul (Sentinel), provided security for US election observers in Afghanistan (Stetson), guarded the Iraqi government's office in Baghdad (Vanquish), provided security for clients in Baghdad (AES Baghdad), done the QRF at Baghdad international airport (Pegasus), provided security for US clients in Basra (Southern Cross), operations manager in Kabul (Country Team) and, currently, providing security for US clients in southern Afghanistan (Geryon). Typically, when you're in Iraq, you can't do enough to secure a move to Afghanistan and when you're over here, God, how you wish you were back in Iraq! But I've been extremely fortunate to have worked with some exceptional men and the adventures have been absolutely superb. When you're racing across the Iraqi desert, in open formation with all guns blazing (test firing of course!) ... well, there's not much to beat it! At the moment, we're based in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan. The Royal Marines recently took over from the Paras who described the fighting here as some of the worst since Korea! Only yesterday, the Marines were forced to withdraw after a long firefight with the enemy! But they seem happy to leave us alone which will probably last as long as our clients are willing to pour money into the local community. I'm hoping that Global will expand beyond the Middle East and offer opportunities to work in Africa or S. America but meanwhile it's a vista of desert and poverty and filth." Another of our members is currently deployed as a Doctor with ISAF in Afghanistan.
