DIPLOMATIC RECEPTION Sunday, June 10, 2007 Four of our members were again present for the Croatian Embassy's Armed Forces Day diplomatic reception on Wednesday, 30th May. In spite of the short notice we were proud to be the only representatives of the Croatian military present, alongside Defence Attache Pukovnik Zeljko Samardzija, whose kind invitation to meet at Piccadilly's prestigious Air Force Club in London we were happy to accept. We had a long talk with the Air Attache from the American Embassy who showed great interest in CFIVA, at the expense of other diplomats who were hovering close by, eager to seek his presence. We must thank most sincerely Mrs Paro the wife of His Excellency the Croatian Ambassador who paid us the kindest compliments about our activities, both now and in the past. The Ambassador too found an opportunity to spend some considerable time with us in spite of the large demands upon him at these functions. We also learn that father Drago Berisic, of the Croatian Catholic Mission, who blessed our new barjak (standard) in a ceremony in 2005, is to return to Croatia. Father Drago has been a fixture of the Croatian community in Britain and a solid, loyal supporter of our Association. We will miss him greatly. We were proud to use this event to remember our fallen comrades, those veterans less fortunate and those Croatian, Bosnian and other soldiers currently serving in Afghanistan and other theatres of war. Very special thanks must go to Mrs Samardzija who produced a truly delicious and spectacular range of Croatian cakes, as to rival the very best slasticarna to be found in Samobor! The Association thanks all those who attended, at considerable time and expense to themselves. Being an evening, there was very limited time afforded us to have a drink together after the reception. Oh well, we'll just have to make up for it later!
