CFIVA AT THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM
Wednesday, October 1, 2008
Another milestone of pride and achievement for the Association was reached on Saturday,6th September in London, England when the project entitled "TESTAMENT," filmed interviews with International Volunteers by British artist Duncan Pickstock reached its first live audience at no less a venue than the world famous Imperial War Museum. Originally, six volunteers from the ranks of CFIVA were recorded, speaking at some length about their very private reasons for coming to fight in the Croatian and Bosnian wars of independence. The project was about personal belief, not about war stories and also included interviews with Spanish Civil War veterans, foreign legionnaires and even a former anarchist. The eventual screening was narrowed down to six, ten minute interviews featuring two of our members, who attended together with family members and CFIVA Secretary Daniel Kington. After a brief introduction from Duncan, the lights in the museum's cinema dimmed and the film began; no commentary, no spliced footage, no background music or narrators passing judgement. And it worked perfectly. Our two participants were articulate and intelligent in relating candidly their private motivations and experiences. The audience were riveted and interacted completely with the monologue. There was a palpable, universal respect and admiration for our colleagues, not least their courage for participating in such a sensitive project. Meeting up in a local Pub afterwards, several members of the audience recognising them, approached to express their admiration for what they'd done and indeed, to all of the International Volunteers for what we did in the dark days of 1991-5. Thanks again to all the members of CFIVA who bravely consented to assist this project, a record of which has been placed for posterity in the IWM's archives.
