Heinz (last name unknown)

Known only as "Heinz," this German volunteer was never properly identified. He was murdered in woods near Siroki Brijeg, Bosnia in 1994 whilst serving in the notorious Tuta Grupa HVO. In 1995 two German volunteers who had served in the HVO near Mostar in 1993-4 were sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Memmingen, southern Germany. Falk Simang (31) and Ralf Mrachacz (41) both from Neu Ulm and former soldiers of the East German Army, were found guilty on 14th December of murdering two other German volunteers. The killers, helped by another German and an Austrian volunteer, shot dead one colleague they suspected of theft and murdered another who had committed モtreasonヤ by wanting to quit their group. They then burned the corpses of their victims in nearby woods in an attempt to hide their crimes. These activities were brought to light when one of the killers bragged about what he had done on television. One of the victims was subsequently identified as Constantin Biekse (see separate entry). A third victim known as "Stefan" was also reported. Although never properly identified, Heinz's body bore a distinctive tattoo of a young woman that survived the murderers' clumsy attempts to burn it. One day it may lead to his full identity and some closure at least for his family.
