Jurgen Schmidt

Jurgen was a German volunteer who had served with the anti-tank unit of 134 (Zadar) Brigade HV during the initial phase of the war in Croatia 1991-92. In 1992 he moved on to Bosnia and enlisted in the 'Eugen Kvaternik' Brigade of the HVO at Bugojno. On the 24th January 1993 he was on a combat mission near the village of Duretbegov Dolac near Gornji Vakuf. Only the briefest details are known. He apparently walked into an ambush during which he received several gunshot wounds, resulting in his death. A Croatian officer who served with him said of Jurgen that "he was one of the best soldiers he had known." Jurgen was from Cologne and after his death a memorial service was held in the Croatian Catholic Mission in that city.
