Christian Wurtenberg
A Swiss journalist in his early twenties, he came to Croatia in the Autumn of 1991 to report on the war of Croatian independence. Appalled at the civilian casualties and the overwhelming odds faced by the fledgling Croatian National Guard, he joined the Spaniard Floresメ International Company in Osijek on 28th December. Nine days later, he was dead. It is alleged that he was murdered on 6th January 1992 during a patrol in No Manメs Land by two members of his own unit, paranoid and fearful of his journalistic background. The hospital at Osijek conducting a post-mortem examination confirmed his date of death, reporting that he had been killed モas a result of mechanical action with a blunt weapon and later strangulation with hands and rope.ヤ Christian's laptop computer disappeared and his diary was eventually returned to his family with some of its pages torn out. His death was investigated by the British journalist Paul Jenks, who also met an untimely and deeply suspicious death in the same area a few months later.
