Albert Borovoj

Albert Borovoj was a Ukrainian who had previously served as a paratrooper in the Soviet Army. He came to Croatia in March 1992 and joined the Croatian Muslim Democratic Party (HMDS) in Zagreb from where he was posted to 101. Brigade HVO, a mixed unit of Croatian volunteers, Bosnian-Muslims and Bosnian-Croats based in northern Bosnia. He was last seen by a fellow International Volunteer in a Slavonski Brod caf← bar whilst on leave in July 1992, shortly before a major counter-offensive against Serb forces besieging the doomed city of Bosanski Brod. The battle took place in August and Albert was believed to have been killed by shrapnel in an area near the town of Derventa known as "Death Valley." Albert's wife later informed the friend that her husband never returned from Bosnia and she never heard of him again.
